Body language is one of the most effective forms of communication, often more so than actual words. The most life-changing words might be coming out of your mouth but none of them will make a lasting impression if you are maintaining poor body language. Here are a few tips to use body language as a tool to empower your interactions:

  • Maintain eye contact. This may seem overstated, but it is truly one of the most integral parts of interpersonal communication. If you are talking to a single person, make sure to maintain eye contact with them (don’t creepily stare at them though). If you’re talking to a group of people, make sure you shift your eye contact to look at everybody in turn instead of focusing on one person only.

  • Correct your posture. Slouching can make you seem lazy, disinterested, and aloof. That’s the last thing you want when you’re trying to connect with people, right? Make sure to keep a straight spine as this has been found to give off the impression that you’re confident, capable, and you know what you’re talking about.

  • Keep your hands free. Don’t clench your hands or awkwardly hold them by your side when talking to others. Let them be loose. However, don’t wave them around too violently as this can make people focus more on your hands than what you’re saying.

  • Use a firm handshake. Not too firm though, as it can be uncomfortable for the other person. Make sure to practice your handshake a couple of times with a close friend or a family member.

  • Avoid touching your face. I know it can be tempting to scratch your nose or adjust your hair, but it is shown to be perceived as a sign of dishonesty so try to keep your hands away from your face as much as possible.

  • Don’t fidget. This makes you seem disinterested and disengaged.

  • Keep your expression warm and cordial. Smile occasionally to make sure you don’t give off a rude impression.
